Instructional Design - Integrating Technology

Designing Instruction
This seminar will demonstrate a broad range of topics related to planning and organizing your instruction. It will help you to identify tools to plan and organize your instruction and teach you how to create a concept map using the tool of your choice (pen/paper, Microsoft Drawing Tools, Open Mind or Smart Ideas Concept Mapping Software).
 
Effective PowerPoint Presentations
This seminar will identify key elements for using PowerPoint effectively. The seminar will also review options for enhancing presentations and applying key elements of design to an existing PowerPoint presentation.
 
Internet Plagiarism
This seminar will identify techniques for spotting a plagiarized paper and discuss Internet Plagiarism at the College of Charleston.
 
Pre-made Content Sampler - An Introduction
This session will demonstrate the differences between Knowledge Hunts, Subject Samplers, and Web Quests and will show how to use them effectively in class.

Video Editing with iMovie
This two-hour hands-on course will cover the basics of video editing. It will take you through the process of “capturing” video from a VHS tape, cutting it down to smaller, usable clips and determining the best output for your audience. While iMovie is a Macintosh only program, the course is appropriate for all users as we will be using the capturing equipment in the Faculty Technology Center which is available to all faculty.

WebCT Overview - full day class
This 8 hour hands-on course will cover the basics of WebCT. Learn the basic tools for developing a WebCT class: Adding a syllabus and communication tools (email, chat, threaded discussion). Learn how to create columns in the grade book, create a calculated column to tally midterm or final grades and release grades to the students. Introduction to content management within WebCT.
 

WebCT Introduction
This 2 hour session is designed to give an overview of the Course Management Software called WebCT. WebCT enables the instructor to manage all course content and interactions efficiently. This introduction will cover everything a WebCT newbie needs to know. Topics include: navigating the WebCT interface, customizing the appearance of your class, uploading files, and adding pages and tools. No prior knowledge of WebCT is required!

 
WebCT Syllabus and Communication Tools
Learn the basic tools for developing a WebCT class: Adding a syllabus and communication tools (email, chat, threaded discussion).
 
WebCT Grade book
Learn how to create columns in the grade book, create a calculated column to tally midterm or final grades and release grades to the students. We will also discuss how grades can be submitted through WebCT.
 
Software Applications
Creating PDF's with Adobe Acrobat
Learn the basics of creating PDF's with Adobe Acrobat. Upon completion of the session you should: 1) know why and when to use PDF's, 2) understand the limitations of PDF's, 3) be comfortable turning existing MS Word documents into PDF files, 4) be comfortable making small editing changes to a PDF document, 5) understand how to use Acrobat's advanced features to annotate large documents, 6) be able to use some of the basic reviewing and commenting features in Acrobat.
 
Microsoft PowerPoint for PC/Windows
This course is designed to a teach participants how to create a lecture or presentation using PowerPoint that includes the following variables: 1) Slide transitions effects and multiple design templates, 2) Text boxes from blank slides and text animations, 3) Internal and external hyperlinks, 4) Photographs, clip art, audio files, and video using timing, effects, order and grouping tools, and animation, 5) Use of the PP drawing tools to create simple shapes and design enhancements. 6) Use of the PP picture editing tool to make simple adjustments and enhancements to photographs, 7) Create lecture notes and handouts, and 8) Save presentation in variety of formats.

Microsoft Word Collaboration Tools
Learn to take advantage of Microsoft Word for tracking changes in a document. This feature is useful when collaborating with others on the writing of a document, when commenting on a student's written work, or when you want to keep track of changes throughout the writing process. Word's change tracking feature allows instructors to offer comments and suggestions to improve the style of a student's writing while maintaining a record of the suggestions and allowing for comparison with the original document once editing changes have been made.

This seminar will demonstrate a broad range of topics related to Microsoft Outlook on the Windows platform at a variety of skill levels.  We will look at the use of Outlook Tools such as E-mail, Calendar, Tasks, and Contacts.  Then, we will take a more in-depth look at the collaborative tools that are available in each of these areas.

Come learn the basics of the world’s most powerful image editing program! Topics include: adjusting color, brightness and contrast, removing unwanted elements, layers, and the selection tools. All topics are applicable to both Photoshop Elements and the full version. No prior knowledge of Photoshop is required.
 
Smart Classrooms
Smart Classroom Orientations
Informal, hands-on training sessions. The sessions are intended to give faculty a quick overview of the equipment in their Smart Classrooms. Sessions often last 2 hours and include a demonstration of the equipment and dedicated time for questions and hands-on activities using any course material or equipment participants would like to try out in the room.
