Conficker Virus Alert

ESince November, the computer worm, Conflicker, has been spreading across the Internet and has now infected over 9 million PCs. If infected, attackers can take complete control of your PC. There is some concern by many computer security professionals that this Wednesday (April Fool's Day), these infected PCs could be remotely commanded to distribute spam, capture sensitive data, or participate in any number of other online scams.

The College of Charleston IT Division’s standard configuration for all network connected computers includes configuring Symantec Anti-Virus and Windows updates to run automatically, as well as activating built-in Firewall protection. Provided these settings have not been modified, your computer will be as well protected as is currently possible.

To verify that your computer is as secure as possible:

  1. Make sure antivirus software is installed and up to date.
  2. Install all critical operating system updates.
  3. Verify that Windows Defender is installed and up to date.

Please contact Helpdesk@cofc.edu if you have questions or require assistance verifying your settings.
